Born in Syracuse, NY, Henry is a graduate of Syracuse University.
His degree is in Business Administration, but his passion was for design. During his career, Henry has held the positions of Vice President and Director of Merchandising and Marketing for C.F. Hathaway; President of Eagle Shirtmakers and President and CEO of Manhattan Shirt Company, where he originated the John Henry brand in men's and women's sportswear.
In 1978, he introduced his first sportswear and furnishings collection for men under his own name, and followed that a year later with a collection for women. Both collections were carried by leading stores in the United States and by Harvey Nicholas in London. A tailored clothing collection was launched in 1985.

Called upon frequently to speak as an expert on talk shows and in the trade press, Henry was elected a member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America, and was the first desginer to create opening ceremonies uniforms worn by the United States Olympic teams at the summer and winter games in 1992.
